Perry County

The only site in Perry County where the Lomaxes made recordings was the county seat of Hazard, but this in no way mitigates their success: it was here they met the brilliant and prolific fiddler Luther Strong, and the banjo-playing, ballad-singing sheriff of the county, Justus Begley. They also documented many local women singing play-party songs, sacred material, and ballads of both Old World and local derivation. Topical pieces were contributed by the “Singing Miner,” George Davis, who would soon after find regional renown performing over the airwaves of WSGS and WKIC (“Voice of the Hazard Kentucky Coalfield”).
